Firmware Update New Kindle Scribe Software Update

Active Canvas is here! Also of note-- there is a different update for the 2022 scribe and the 2024 scribe. The active canvas feature works great!

Version 5.17.3 – January 2025

Here's what's new:

Side Panel Margin: You can now open a side panel margin to write notes in eBooks with enhanced typesetting and Word documents. Choose between docked or overlay settings, and tap the caret to adjust its width.

Performance improvements, bug fixes, and other general enhancements.

Worth update from 5.14.2 to 5.17.1.0.3?

Hello to all.I i am on 5.14.2 fw jailbraked and i only use koreader to read some free pdf's.I want to ask:
1)Is there any special reason to update to 5.17.1.0.3? (Bug fixes,battery life,speed etc)?
2)If yes: Can i then jailbreak it again with winter break? (I suppose yes)
3)Can update be performed without registering?
4)Can jailbreak be performed without registering?
All i want is to have an unregistered jailbreaked device.(If someone of you think my device is stolen etc,i have told it on another forum from beginning that it was a present from my aunt)

Am I the only one who wants to just READ on my Kindle Scribe?

I wanted a nice and somewhat 'light' ebook reader with a large screen. I got it.

I don't want to doodle, take notes, draw strange alien creatures, highlight, take notes, draw squares, draw circles, take notes, annotate, list, world-build, draw triangles, take notes, scribble all over the screen making thick and thin lines, etc., etc.

If the answer to my Subject header is 'Yes', then I'll continue to read as I absently pop a pimple, knowing I'm the only owner who wishes to read an ebook.

Replace characters while fetching news to MOBI format

Is there a way to search/replace characters while fetching news to MOBI format?

I download various news sources with Calibre to MOBI format, which I then save to my Kindle Paperwhite. I find MOBI's table of contents navigation far superior to EPUB.

Specifically, I want to replace "—" with " -- " because words to the left or right of an em dash cannot be selected for Kindle's dictionary lookup.

Problem transferring books via USB

Purchased a book from Amazon this morning and it did not appear in the Digital Content Library. Instead it appeared in a Beta list of James' books and I can't find any way to transfer it via USB. They asked me to fill out a questionnaire about the new page and I protested the move, but it may be that that was the desired result of the change.

Anyone else have this happen?

Delete firmware update files

Before I put airplane mode, my Kindle already downloaded some update file and I would like to delete it. Once I decide to update, I'll do it manually.
I've got few questions:

1) Is it safe to delete update files? Without causing system instability or something

2) How to find all update files? Where they are stored?

Hacks Help with Jailbreaking Voyage

I tried jailbreaking my Voyage yesterday according to the winterbreak kindlemodding.org docs, but was met with a few issues. First, the file explorer didn't allow me to copy the files (fixed by extracting tar to new folder and then copying). After this was solved I moved on to attempting the jailbreak. It didn't show up the firts time so I tried again, which worked well.

Next I tried installing the hotfix. This is where things started to go wrong. I plugged my kindle in to the PC, dragged the bin onto the kindle root, and ejected and unplugged it. But no luck - the jailbreak didn't recognize it AT ALL. So then I tried again by deleting the hotfix and reinstalling it, but still didn't work. Then I rebooted (probably shouldn't have) it showed update error 2 and then it restarted into normal.

So how do I fix this? What am I doing wrong? TIA

Troubleshooting Kindle DXG slow PDF and invisible pages: cause and solution

I noticed that gradually (during months/years) I started to get slow page switches in PDF. First for some files, which was newly published, while old PDFs worked okay. Then I noticed it even for very old PDFs which worked perfectly before. The slowness increased to the point of tens of seconds, and I also started to notice that some pages cane be not displayed at all (they are switching, very slowly, but the screen is blank). Slowness didn't affect mobi books at all. Finally Kindle just got frozen during PDF page switch.

I held power slider for 30 seconds (15 seconds is required in manual) then released it, to do some "reset". Device restarted with some progress bar. Books, collections, highlights and books progress persisted, but books were unsorted as they were never opened before, I guess some timestamps got reset.

More importantly: all PDFs started to work perfectly again, fast page turns even on "new" PDF files (I first thought the problem was because of some "modern" internal PDF markup for recently published files).

I never did such reset during my Kindle use before (I used Kindle for couple of years, before that it was unused for years since the purchase in 2011). It looks like some internal caches were gradually filled with some accumulated data which caused PDFs to become slow. Then these caches were purged on reset and PDFs became fast again. This is my theory but of course I don't know anything about Kindle firmware.

Now I wonder how long PDFs will remain fast, will the reset work again, and what is the actual cause of this.

Tip to create a Collection on unregistered Kindle paperwhite 2024.

Twice, when tapping the three dots on a book sent from Calibre, the option to create a collection appeared. However, it has only happened twice, and despite repeating the process several times, it hasn’t appeared again. This is on a 2024 Paperwhite that is not registered with Amazon.

Has this happened to anyone else? Do you know how to reproduce it or figure out why the option to create a collection appears sometimes?, even though, as you know, it is a disabled feature on an unregistered Kindle.

Can someone who knows enough about Kindle Jailbreaks create a post that says what versions of what software can be installed on what Kindles with what firmware? It seems it's rather confusing to a lot of people as to what to install on their Kindle with whatever the firmware is. Thanks.

Amazon is removing Download & Transfer option

Went to download a book this morning and saw the following posted on the Download page:

Quote:
Starting February 26, 2025, the “Download & Transfer via USB” option will no longer be available. You can still send Kindle books to your Wi-Fi enabled devices by selecting the “Deliver or Remove from Device” option.
Makes me glad I bought an old Paperwhite so I can continue to download to that and directly copy the file from there and remove DRM

Hiding booklets from the main menu?

Hello everyone,

I have just finished jailbreaking my Paperwhite 3, currently on firmware 5.12.4.

Everything seems to be working. I do however have a minor nitpick: the jailbreak has added KUAL, the hotfix, and the "Kindle feedback" booklets to the main menu, which are quite ugly to look at:

I can hide them selecting Filter > Books, however that adds an (also quite ugly) banner on top of my bookshelf:

If I recall correctly the banner was not there in previous firmwares, so the easiest options would be to downgrade it, however as I understand downgrading wipes the Kindle and every book I have added, which I would rather avoid.

Hence my question is the following: is there any homebrew tool that allows me to hide entries from the main menu?

Downloading Kindle Books?

On February 26th, Amazon will stop allowing book-owners to download books and transfer them by usb. Instead, we're supposed to download them directly to each device.

A couple years ago, Amazon stopped allowing book-owners to download books directly to older devices. Instead, we're supposed to download them and transfer them by usb.

Aside from that, the Kindle app is not compatible with Linux, and may not be compatible with some older Mac and Windows systems.

What are good options to download Kindle books?

Kindle Scribe: using PDF files as notebooks?

With the latest firmware update Amazon has finally brought the new AI features to UK accounts, so I’ve been looking into integrating those into my workflow. I often have to review technical documents in PDF format, so I send them to my Scribe and write notes directly on the page and in the margins. I would like to use the AI tools to summarize those notes in text format, however it seems that the tools are only available for notebooks (the icon doesn’t show up in PDFs).

Is there a way to transform PDF files to somehow be able to use them as notebooks? When creating a new notebook, several background templates are available, so one could imagine having a document as such a “background”, perhaps just as an image. I understand I would lose the PDF search features, but that’s a price I’d be willing to pay.

Does anyone have any idea on how to achieve this?

Troubleshooting KUAL stop working

I recently have jailbrkoen my Kindle Paperwhite 10th gen (PW4) with winter break.

Everything looks grate for a week, I start reading from KOReaeder. Yesterday KoReader has crushed and when I tried to launch it with Kual it doesn't start. I have tried to remove KoReader and re-install program and extension but nothing. Today I have done a fabric reset, I have done again every single step to the jailbreak and everything looks fine. Until KoReader still does not launch.
The write "Starting KoReader" does not appear and the home page refesh with no effect. I have tried to install some other application for kual (kterm and gtkMiners) but they does not start too. Otherwise "Rename OTA binaries" go without problem.

Can anyone help me to figured out and fix the problem?
I like so much KOReader.

Some AZW3 books don't show proper chapter title

Hey!

Some of my ebooks in AZW3 format don't show proper chapter title.
TOC (All chapters list) is working fine, I can move around chapters w/o problems.
But no matter if Im at chapter 1,2,3,4,5 [...] it always shows "Chapter 1"
In book menu, where you can see page, time left in chapter, %.
And title of chapter there always shows same title

Is it possible to fix it?

KOA3 Oasis with FW 5.12.2, what to do with it?

Hi!
I jailbroken my Kindle Oasis a few years ago via OpenSesame and done no update since then.
The Firmware is still on 5.12.2.
Are there any benefits to make a Factory Reset, do an update and make a new Jailbreak with Winterbreak?
I'm hoping for a better battery life, faster device,... when I'm updating to a newer Firmware?

Hiya - Developer query - can someone a lot more knowledgeable than me confirm if running Java applets are still viable in versions 5+. Looking through my Kindle Paperwhite 7th Generation in ssh, there are libraries for Swing and AWT that I can see. Just curious as I wrote an applet some time ago that has been collecting dust and would be very cool to see it up and running again especially on my device.

I posted this under the WinterBreak thread but understandably got lost in the ether. Hope someone could enlighten me still though <3

Hacks Replacement Kindle software?

A few years ago, I thought I saw software discussed that was a replacement of the reading software for jailbroken kindles. I cannot find that anymore.

Now that Amazon is basically saying "Walled garden" even more than before, I'm looking at saying "Give me better reading software" for 3's and 4's (non-touch).

Am I mistaken, or does such software exist, and where?

Hi, I have a PW5 that I jailbroke with WatchThis. I want to deregister it so I can link it to a different Amazon account. Is there a way to do that while keeping the jailbreak? Any gotchas I should be aware of? Thanks for any help you can provide!
