Python 3.9 Numpy

$

I have been learning and using Niluje's python modules for a while now and I have updated each time Niluje has updated his snapshots - what a wonderful resource!

I wanted to use a three dimensional array so I started using Numpy in the IDLE system on my PC thinking that I could then simply port it to the Kindle.

Sadly, I was totally misguided. I have tried for days now and cannot get a working version - or any version at all for that matter - of Numpy on my Kindle PW2 or PW3. All my other python code ports across OK.

I tried all the command combinations I could find starting from 'pip3 install numpy' to downloaded allegedly compatible ARMv7 numpy wheels but none of them run.

I have tried compiling from source but there are many dependencies that fail for various reasons that are mostly beyond my expertise.

So, my question is:
1. does anyone have a Kindle compatible Numpy wheel which I could use on my Paperwhite 2 or Paperwhite 3, or

2. as a special request to Niluje, is it possible to make a python version which includes Numpy because I have always been able to install your packages without any problems.

I realise that Anaconda may be an option but for consistency I would prefer to stay with the 'standard' python. I am not sure how to install Anaconda anyway.

I hope someone can help me.

Setting where Amazon does not change cover

I cannot figure out how to change settings for this. I always leave automatic book updates turned off, so that is not the issue. Covers in my library have been changing the past 2 months, I notice when browsing, they are reverting to newer editions of covers, which in many cases I do not want. Any suggestions? At first I thought it was my imagination, but no, I keep double checking and I know some of these books were not placed on device with this cover art.

Older kindle

I have an older kindle. I think it’s 5th gen. It no longer connects to WiFi so I being the genius that I am plugged it into my computer to download a book. Well it deleted everything. Now I have an empty kindle that won’t connect to the internet. I tried to download an update on the Amazon page and my computer cannot open a bin file. Is it a lost cause? Thanks.

I have a newer kindle that I hate. Is there one similar to the old ones or way to fix mine

Thread in Kindle subreddit says kindle now has cover as screensaver option

$

Is this true? Or a hoax? It looks legit, and people have shown a screenshot of the toggle in the settings. Also, lots of anecdotal confirmation. All people who have this seem to be on 5.13.4 or 5.13.5 and are outside the US.

I literally just changed to Kobo (Libra arrived on Tuesday) because I’d given up waiting for amazon ever to do anything about the covers or anything even slightly innovative again. Not that this is innovative, but it is for the Kindle these past years. I love my Kobo anyway, so happy to have my much-missed progress bar back, and it just feels very nice in the hand after the cold hard metal.

Anyway, I hope it's true, and was wondering if anyone here has the option?

Accessories Cover for Oasis: Yes or no?

I got a new Oasis the other day and am debating whether or not to get a cover like this MoKo. I never had a case for my old Paperwhite, but for some (possibly irrational) reason the Oasis feels more delicate. But, I'm worried it will just add bulk and that the front cover will end up getting in the way more than anything.

In general do you recommend a cover for the Oasis? Why or why not?

Factory reset with jailbreak survives?

Device: Kpw4 (G000PP) running 5.13.5 firmware
Jailbreak method:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...&postcount=455
Hotfix installed:
Update_jailbreak_hotfix_1.16.N_install

Wanted to reset my kindle because getting to screensaver would takes about 5 seconds. It always closes the backlight first and then takes about 2 sec to get to the screensavers.

I wonder if some of the modifications I made caused it, so I want to give it a fresh start. But I've upgraded my software and I want to keep my jailbreak.

Some instructions given there:

On paperwhite 5.7+ versions, you will not lose the jailbreak unless you do the reset followed by a software update. ( but reset does remove all the hotfix and SS and other hacks. )

You should be able to re-install the .bin version of the hotfix ( the nomax version from my snapshot thread ), and then continue installing all the other hacks you want to have.

The Key is stored in /etc which you cannot see over USB.

Q:
1.Following the instructions I've updated the hotfix after the software update, am I safe to factory reset my kindle?
2.If not, what should I do?

Troubleshooting Kindle (10th Generation) won’t update and Amazon have been useless...

$

I don’t know whether anyone here can offer any insight into the problem I’m having here, but I’m at my wits end.

My basic Kindle (2019, 10th gen) is stuck on 5.12.4 and is refusing to update. I just keep getting an “Update was unsuccessful. UPDATE ERROR 4” page, before it restarts back on 5.12.4. I’ve unregistered it; didn’t work. I’ve factory reset it; didn’t work.

So I went to Amazon’s customer service, who were useless. They insisted on guiding me through the manual update process a further six times (I’d already tried it four times by this point) before pushing it on to the technical support team. I got an email from them this morning with instructions on how to manually update...

However, they also included instructions on how to send diagnostic files. All I had to do was reply to that email and attach them.

The email bounced back. That account isn’t set up for incoming mail...

:furious3:

So I’m at my wit’s end with this fucking thing. In a moment of desperation, I tried jailbreaking it yesterday, but I’ve not got a great head for things of that nature, and besides, I don’t think there’s anything I need to be able to do that the regular Kindle software doesn’t already offer.

Does anyone have any cast iron ways of nuking the firmware that’s currently holding my Kindle hostage?

Troubleshooting Paperwhite freezing

I got a Paperwhite for Christmas.

Every day, the first time I use it, the touch screen does not respond to my stylus. I then "restart" it, and everything is fine for the rest of the day.

It's a pain the neck, and a waste of five minutes every day, but the situation is not like the thing never works.

Is this a common problem? Do you think I should exchange it for another?

Thanks!

basic functionality in kindle

Hello,

Can someone please help me with the method of going to a certain page in a pdf document in Kindle Paperwhite?

I tap the top left to bring up various links and see the GO TO icon. I tap that twice it brings up several "Loc 000" choices? the first having a + icon in the top right corner. From there it gets crazy for me. I expect the plus to give me a chance to specify a certain page but see no way to input the page I want.

Also. I went through the customization of the appearance and saved the changes but they are not reflected in the view.

Tool to map serial number to kindle model and manufacture date

$

Attached is a perl script to decode a kindle serial number into model and manufacture date information. If at least 12 S/N characters are entered, the full model and manufacture date information is printed. If fewer than 12 S/N characters are entered, the amount of information printed is reduced. Kindle Voyage and earlier models only need 3 characters, PW3 and later need 6. Serial numbers may be entered with or without embedded '-' characters. Serial numbers with embedded space characters must be in quotes.

Examples
Code:

perl kindle_info.pl B00E15011395xxxx
Prefix: B00E
Model: Kindle 4 NoTouch Silver (2011)
Made: 20x1 Week 39 Day 5
Nicks: K4, K4S

perl kindle_info.pl G000-p8xx
Prefix: G000P8
Model: Kindle Oasis 2 (2017) WiFi 8GB (Germany, Italy, USA)
Nicks: KOA2, KOA2W8
Notes: [Support added in KindleTool 1.6.5]

Latest paperwhite's screen vs. voyage's screen

$

For those who have had both the latest paperwhite, whatever generation that is, and the voyage, is the PW's screen now as good as the voyage's? I think the answer used to be "not quite" because the voyage's lighting is more even and the screen is just a little bit clearer. The text feels closer to the screen somehow. But maybe that has changed?

(I know that even the first gen oasis's screen wasn't quite as good as the voyage's and had a more noticeable gradient because it was horizontal and your eyes scan left to right as you read. The newer oasis is better? At any rate, I don't think the form factor is quite good for me -- I don't have normal hands -- so it's probably out)

Troubleshooting Goodreads error on sideloaded books

$

I am not sure if this is a Kindle or a Calibre issue, but after I've read a sideloaded book I am prompted to rate it. However, whenever I do that, I get an error message. (I am sorry that I don't have the actual phrasing—it was late when I saw it again last night.) Nor does the book get automatically marked as "Read" on Calibre.

My Kindle is connected to both my Amazon and Goodreads accounts, and I am able to go into the Goodreads interface on the Kindle and do this manually without any issue.

This is on a new Kindle Oasis, but I had the same issue on my old PW2. The books are formatted as KFX and side-loaded via Calibre.

Kindle root password seems to get changed automatically

$

I've rooted my Kindle (I think its KT2) and have changed its password after mntroot rw, passwd root, and type in the new password twice.

What seems to happen is that after a few hours, the password becomes invalid and I can no longer SSH in to upload items/make changes. This has happened a couple of times and the past few times I thought it may be down to my failing memory. So I unplug it, enable USBnetwork and connect via telnet to change the password again. But this time round, I use a very familiar password and also wrote it down. 12h later, the password has changed again, disabling login.

My question is why is this happening and what can I do to make sure password changes remain permanent?

Refurbished 6” Kindle Fire!!!

I took a chance with above purchase from Amazon as they don’t produce
6” Kindle Fire anymore...

I set up as usual and it stalls out after putting WiFi address, keep getting
“obtaining IP address” message...

no problem with WiFi password as I have 3 other Kindles and 4 Apple devices and they all work...

Note: it says “excellent signal strength” but keeps buffering like mentioned above...

kindle fire hd7 no boot

i have a kindle fire hd 7 (i believe its 2nd gen) model# on back cover says x43z60. Messing around with unlocking software, i attempted to unlock bootloader and when it rebooted, the screen went black (as expected) but then it never came back on. its not being recognized in device manager. nothing comes up on the kindle screen. it appears to be completely bricked. upon searching for solutions online, i ended up purchasing usb microB breakout board to build my own "factory fastboot cable". after following the directions for using it, i still have NOTHING. lol so i took the back cover off, disconnected the battery for a couple hours, plugged it back in and still nothing. i have also tried holding power button down for 20seconds, 30 seconds etc... and nothing. then i noticed on the mainboard some writing that peaked my interest, thinking it may help with unbricking this device. see attached picture

Kindle Paperwhite problem

Hello all

I have a Kindle paperwhite with a problem that I hope the techies amongst us can help me with.
It has a damaged screen, I have bought a "donor" demo kindle from a well known auction site and following the advice on this forum and you tube have swopped over my mobo to the replacement screen, so far so good.
However when I refit the battery the kindle tries to boot but after a number of attempts it shows a screen saying "your kindle needs repair" contact amazon customer care....
If I re fit the mobo back to the original damaged screen it works perfectly, am I right in thinking that amazon "locks" the mobo to the screen??
Has anyone else come across this before?
Does anybody have a way to fix this?
I have trawled the forum for an answer but so far not found anything so here's my first post.
Any help will be gratefully appreciated! :help:
