Kindle KT5 fails to install hotfix after reset.

As the title says, I can not install the hotfix after resetting. My kindle does not even show invalid update file. It just does not recognise it. I modded this kindle a little less then a week ago using winterbreak. I had installed koreader, and found out it had a terminal. after experimenting a bit, i typed restart. The kindle froze, and did nothing for a few minutes. I held down the power button until it rebooted, and all of my books were gone, except three. A book I bought on the store, a pdf I uploaded to the cloud, and update hotfix. I tried to get kual back on, but it kept failing to show the "book". I reset the kindle, reinstalled kual, and it seemed to be working. but the hotfix was not working, and koreader also crashed when trying to open it. I will show the log below:

Book covers not showing for the deleted ones on Aamazon

$

I recently found out that the covers of the books that have benn pulled from Amazon won’t show on Kindle home/library, just the ugly generic cover.
I really like seeing covers on my Kindle so this discovery was a huge letdown.
I’m sure many of you have those books that you bought on Amazon a long time ago but haven’t gotten around to reading, and they’re no longer available on Amazon for whatever reason.
I realized I have quite a lot of those, and just to think their covers won’t be displayed quite depresses me.

So I’m curious, do you do something about it (like downloading and converting them to epub)? Or just shrug it off and read them? Are there any ways to make those covers show up other than downloading onto your PC (apparently this is no longer an option if you have only the newest model?) and reading them as a personal document?
(I paid for them so no cover on display really annoys me...:()
Also, does this happen on Kobo?

Thank you!

About the capabilities of modding a jailbroken Kindle

I just heard of the new jailbreak method.
I'm not particularly interested in KOReader or tools that completely change the functionality, but I want slight modifications like:
- overwriting the translate API to use Google translate or DeepL
- having the "wikipedia" mini window show custom results like from ChatGPT
All modifications are to be made in the built-in reader.
I want to know if these modifications are possible, even if no one's done it yet, I'll try to do it myself.

Any information would be appreciated.

Can there be a WinterBreak forum section so all the threads about this jailbreak can go there and make it easier to find all the info about the jailbreak? I do think this is a very good idea. Thanks.

Kindle Paperwhite 5 Gen 11 2022 - Firmware Upgrades?

$

With all of the discussions around the new Amazon Paperwhite Gen 12 not being able to download and USB transfer eBooks, I'm getting concerned about continuing to install updated firmware on my Kindle Paperwhite 5 Gen 11 2022.

Other than searching these forums, anything else I should be doing to protect my now very valuable PW Gen 11? I'm guessing it will be the last PW I buy.

Heaven help me if I ever have to attempt a battery changeout. My attempt back in 2017 on a Paperwhite 2 - Generation 5 was disastrous. NP right now as the Gen 11 battery is still in great shape due to good charging practices.

Unjailbreak Completely Kindle PW5

I recently jailbroken my Kindle PW5 successfully.
Everything was working fine, I installed the hotfix and cancelled all updates, I installed koreader and was very happy. But today I accidentally chose a factory reset instead of rebooting the device and I didn't realize it right away. As a result, all the jailbreak files were deleted from the root folders of my Kindle. I was upset, but decided to just jailbreak again. But nothing worked, Winter jailbreak simply did not install, when I went to the Kindle store, the standard Amazon store really opened for me, and not the Mesquito store. I tried to figure out what the reason was and noticed that in the settings of my Kindle there is still an option KFT, which appeared there after the jailbreak. So the jailbreak was not completely removed from my Kindle after the reset. But at the same time, it does not work as before. I can not install hotfix, but kual seems to be working. Koreader isn't working.
I also can't figure out how to completely remove the jailbreak from my device. What I need now is help on how to remove all the jailbreak files from the kindle and return it to the original OS. How do I remove all the jailbreak files from the kindle if there is nothing in the root folders when I connect it to the computer? SSH didn't work too.

So I'm new here and just hacked my 1st gen kindle scribe. I guess my biggest question is other than KOReader what other applications/modifications are there for this device?

Whats the best way to prevent updates?

$

I jailbroke with the winterbreak, added the "renametoabin" files, and loaded them with Kual.

But is this the best way to prevent updates? Should I downgrade and what is the best firmware version or most popular for a 9th gen Oasis? I have done a jailbreak on a previous firmware and the update blocker similar to or the same as renametobin didn't work it upgraded me to my current firmware version "5.16.2.1.1" Stability and best GUI are my main concerns for OS version. Any advice will be appreciated.

Bonus what are good ways to edit the screensaver?

Tools [Showcase] ChatGPT and co. on default Kindle reader app

I replaced the wikipedia mini window in the default reader app, with Generative AI like ChatGPT and Gemini

- I injected custom classes in wikipedia.jar file that change the wikipedia url to a custom url. The url is set by editing a file.
- I wrote a simple cloudflare server that receives the Kindle's requests and forwards them to any API of my choice (ChatGPT, Gemini...). The prompt is set as an environment variable that I can edit from my phone / computer.

Troubleshooting Kindle 3 Wifi Firmware Downgrade

$

Hello,

I will try to describe my problem succinctly. I purchased two Kindle 3s for my mother and I. Hers was a Kindle 3 Wifi + 3G model, with firmware 3.4, and mine was a Kindle 3 Wifi with firmware 3.4.2. Hers was easy to jailbreak, install mkk, KUAL, koreader, turn on wifi, attach to calibre OPDS, and start reading.

Mine worked perfectly as well, koreader was able to read books moved to my documents folder, the issue arose when connecting to wifi. I ran into the "This device is not authorized as a test Kindle" issue. This seems to be a problem with (I'm assuming) connecting to wifi with my firmware, because it works fine as long as I don't connect to wifi and the only difference between the two models is the firmware.

This is the jailbreak I am using; https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=225030

I'm assuming in order to get this to work I would need to downgrade my firmware? The only tool that I can find that does this is Kubrick but according to that dedicated thread the live USB won't boot on modern hardware. Does anyone have any ideas on what I could do to downgrade the firmware (or not get that test kindle message)?

My options seems to be:
1. Downgrade the firmware a different way, if you all would happen to know how to do that

2. Just not use the OPDS feature on calibre/koreader and never connect to wifi (annoying to have to connect to PC to move books over)

3. Just buy another kindle from eBay that shows firmware 3.4 in listing.

I will appreciate any reponses!

Recently I've tried disabling ota updates.
The whole process was successful through renaming ota binary files

#!/bin/sh
mntroot rw
rm /mnt/us/update*.bin
cd /usr/bin
mv otaupd otaupd.bck
mv otav3 otav3.bck

echo "#!/bin/sh" > /usr/bin/otav3
echo "/bin/true" >> /usr/bin/otav3
echo "#!/bin/sh" > /usr/bin/otaupd
echo "/bin/true" >> /usr/bin/otaupd
chmod 755 /usr/bin/otav3 /usr/bin/otaupd

mntroot ro
reboot

Run the above code I don't know what went wrong
Unfortunately, I have no other access to these two essential files that I have only one kindle.
Can somebody send me the original ota binaries?I would appreciate it very much if you can help me.

OTA files:
otav3 at /usr/bin/otav3
otaupd at /usr/bin/otaupd

kpw6 5.17.1.0.4 thanks!!!

:help: Paperwhite 11th: Fix a series of mistakes

Hi, I'd jailbroke PW 11th (G002DK) succesfully with LanguageBreak on a 5.16.2.1.1 firmware. Everything went smoothly, I'd installed KUAL, MPRI, until I've decided to install USBNetwork and mess with some minor configurations on root filesystem. After rebooting Kindle stops at the last 3% or something of loading bar on boot, then enter a bootloop until finally showing the "Your Kindle Needs Repairing". I can access the mount partition with usb cable during the loading period. Let me explain what exactly I did before rebooting and causing this error:

1. Installed USBNetwork and connected with ssh as root
2. Edited the following files:
* /var/local/java/prefs/geninfo with the following content https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...35&postcount=5
* /usr/share/webkit-1.0/pillow/javascripts/search_bar.js (changed const STORE_ID = 'app://com.lab126.store'; replacing store with browser)
* /var/local/system/locale (changed two instances of en_US.utf8 to en_GB.utf8)
3. Exited ssh session, went to settings menu, device, restart
4. Noticing the bootloop, I've panicked and instead of putting LanguageBreak hotfix binary to try to restore something broken, I've I placed the vanilla 5.16.2.1.1 firmware binary instead. System was "upgraded", there was a little message under the tree *** 5.16.2.x :( ***, probably from the JB firmware. The bootloop persisted identically, still.
5. Still not thinking clearly I've made a second mistake, I've dropped the jailbreak exploit (dictionary with that shell gawk script and .pem files) into the mount root, without going through the entering demo mode and all the process required in the instructions. Under the tree image shows now *** JAILBREAK ***
6. I've thought, well, maybe changing the locale required me to put the hotfix with the corresponding en_GB. Dropped the LanguageBreak hotfix*en_GB into the mount root. Error message telling it could not be updated. Bootloop again.
6. The error is the same in every single attempt I've described (reboot loop at the last few % of the progress bar)

Can you help me unbricking this? Thanks!

Unable To Install USBNetwork

I just completed a jailbreak of my PW4 following the WinterBreak instructions at kindlemodding.org with no problems. But now I'm unable to install the USBNetwork that I obtained from the NiLuJe's hacks sticky.

My Kindle SN starts with G000pp12. I've tried restarting and repeating the install process several times. The latest log file is shown below.

Any suggestions on how to fix this? Thx

Kindle Scribe (2nd gen.) can't get out from demo mode

  1. I wanted to jailbreak (LanguageBreak) my Kindle scribe (2nd gen.)
  2. since version.txt file was not available among device files I decided to enter demo mode (hoping it will create such file)
  3. I entered ";enter_demo" during a normal wi-fi connection (wiping wifi network url)
  4. I entered demo mode, but the device stopped being visible on PC
  5. I used ;711 and learned that my version is 5.16.3 (not supported by jailbreak)
  6. tried to exit demo mode and used ;demo command, device loaded nice in airplane mode (I thought that I could live with it until one day JB becomes available for my version) but still I was not able to connect Scribe via usb to PC,
so decided to reboot once again hoping demo mode will stop...

Now I see only login screen and wifi feature is disabled, so I can't register/login. And that's it.

I can't access any menu or anything else.

I can't connect the Kindle to the computer to access its filesystem.

I tried magic swipe gesture - don't work.

Restarting it doesn't help either.

How can I leave this mode and restore please ?

UsbNetwork for KT6 Kindle

Hello,
I've just jailbroken my kindle 11th gen 2024 (named KT6) but I'm unable to find a usbnetwork hack specific for this model. Where I can find it (if it exists)?

I tried to install the latest package avaliable (for KT5) and added USBnetwork to KUAL but I'm unable to connect neither to usb nor wifi ssh (connection refused) and from USBnet menu I get an "sshd down".

I'm very new to kindle hacking so probably there is something I don't understand :book2:
Thanks for help

[KUAL Extension][K4NT] Introducing Kindle Network Scanner

$

Hello everyone,

I’m excited to share a new extension for the Kindle 4 Non-Touch (K4NT) that transforms your device into a network scanner. It scans the Wi-Fi network your Kindle is connected to, identifies devices on the network, and provides detailed information about them. You can navigate through the list of devices and select a device to scan for open ports.
