How to Copy Files to the Internal Folder on Recent Kindle Models

$

I am using a Kindle Scribe(2022) and a Kindle Paperwhite5(11th gen), and both are jailbroken with WinterBreak. The current firmware version is 5.16.9, and I plan to update to 5.17.1.

What I want to do is overwrite the code2000.ttf file in the Kindle's usr/java/lib/fonts folder with another font file by renaming it. The reason I want to do this is that when using WordWise, the font for showing Korean hints in firmware 5.17.1 has become hard to read, and I discovered that this is due to the code2000 font.

I confirmed the location of this file using KOReader's file browser, but copying the file with KOReader is impossible. Maybe due to a permissions issue.

What method can I use to make this possible? It seems that people used usbnetwork to copy files to the Kindle's internal folder in the past, but all the relevant guides are for older Kindle models, so I’m not sure how to apply it to the recent Kindle models.

Kindle Previewer can't handle Custom Icelandic Dictionary

I'm creating an Icelandic dictionary for Kindle (and hopefully any ereader). I have a problem with inflections. I have two words "vor" and "vera" that both can take the form "vorum". However, Kindle lookup will only match with one. When two words share the same entry name Kindle will match both.

Code:

<html xmlns:math="http://exslt.org/math" xmlns:svg="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"
      xmlns:tl="https://kindlegen.s3.amazonaws.com/AmazonKindlePublishingGuidelines.pdf"
      xmlns:saxon="http://saxon.sf.net/" xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"
      xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
      xmlns:cx="https://kindlegen.s3.amazonaws.com/AmazonKindlePublishingGuidelines.pdf"
      xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"
      xmlns:mbp="https://kindlegen.s3.amazonaws.com/AmazonKindlePublishingGuidelines.pdf"
      xmlns:mmc="https://kindlegen.s3.amazonaws.com/AmazonKindlePublishingGuidelines.pdf"
      xmlns:idx="https://kindlegen.s3.amazonaws.com/AmazonKindlePublishingGuidelines.pdf">

  <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">
  </head>

  <body>
    <mbp:frameset>
      <idx:entry name="default" scriptable="yes">
        <idx:orth value="vera">
          <idx:infl inflgrp="noun">
            <idx:iform name="vera" value="vera" />
            <idx:iform name="vorum" value="vorum"/>
          </idx:infl>
          <p><b>vera</b> (so)</p>
        </idx:orth>
      </idx:entry>
      <idx:entry name="default" scriptable="yes">
        <idx:orth value="vor">
          <idx:infl inflgrp="verb">
            <idx:iform name="vera" value="vera" />
            <idx:iform name="vorum" value="vorum" />
          </idx:infl>
          <p><b>vor</b>(no hk)</p>
        </idx:orth>
      </idx:entry>
    </mbp:frameset>
  </body>
</html>

Is it possible to have an inflection like "vorum" match both entries?

I also have an issue with Kindle Previewer returning an error when the custom dictionary is too large. Are there any ways to create a large dictionary for Kindle? I have already tried splitting up my content into multiple html files, but that doesn't seem to work.

Installing / Using KOReader

Howdy folks. After reading about sideloading being disabled in a future update, I decided to jailbreak my kindle today.

The model is PW4 and I followed these instructions to the letter:
https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/WinterBreak/

Everything went pretty smoothly, with the exception of the KUAL install which included a few lines that were roughly 'failed to remount rootfs RO' and 'reboot recommended', however the install ended with a success message and returned me to the UI with KUAL seemingly operational.

I installed KOReader version 'koreader-kindle-v2024.11.zip' from github. It appears as expected in KUAL however all the options (start koreader, start koreader (ASAP), start koreader (no framework)) just put me back at the homescreen without it fully starting.

Any thoughts on what I did wrong here? I also tried reinstalling KUAL (coplate) from MRPI with no difference in outcome.

Cheers!

".cache" in documents - what is it for?

Hi!

I see .cache folder in documents. It contains "KF8" folder and there are some files. What are those files for?

Is it safe to remove them?
Will they go away on their own over time?
Or they gonna take up more and more space over time and can't do anything about it?

Special Offers Ads, KUAL OTA Binaries?

Hi everybody. I've got a B013 KV on 5.13.6 that I just liberated using Winterbreak. I also installed NiLuJe's Screensaver Hack before I realized that I was on a special offers device.

I forgot that I had previously failed to jailbreak my KV with watchthis's jailbreak years ago, and somehow got rid of the special offers ads during that jailbreak. After I factory reset my device to register it and Winterbreak it, the ads came back.

Before I ask customer service to turn off the ads, do I need to restore the OTA binaries through KUAL or adjust any other settings/uninstall anything?
Or is there a new hack I can apply to get rid of them on my own?

Running PW2 KOReader on my KV.

Thanks a bunch guys. -H7G :thanks:

Troubleshooting Has anyone gotten a Paperwhite 1 to register in 2025?

I'm looking to register mine again so I can do WinterBreak, but for the life of me, I can't get it to register. Trying to log in to an existing account just loops back to the registration menu with no error displayed, and trying to register a new account shows Unable to Load. This is on multiple firmwares including the very latest (5.6.1.1), multiple wi-fi networks, trying multiple accounts, factory resetting multiple times. Amazon Support can't help and don't know what's wrong.

Now I'm wondering if the software is hitting non-existent API endpoints or something and there's no way it'll ever work, but I can't find any recent info on it. So I thought I'd ask here: has anyone gotten one to register in 2025?

Unable to see Update Your Kindle - post reset mistake

Good morning,

I have a Kindle Basic (7th Generation) on which I have used WinterBreak and completed the JB process.

I then decided (in error) to reset the device.

Then I tried to redo the JB process.

After redoing the WinterBreak

At the Setting up A Hotfix step, "Update Your Kindle" option is greyed out. I expect that is due to the fact that I have used KUAL to do the rename OTA bin during the first JB process.

I have reinstalled KUAL and MPRI and tried to "restore" but it has not been effective in restoring the "Update Your Kindle" option.

Please help me fix this.

Thank you in advance for your time and assistance.

translation and wiki on an unregistered kindle

if I register a new kindle and then logout of an account and then use it unregistered, will the translation function and wikipedia function still be there?

I am asking people who have done that or who know, not the people who would answer with "why do u want to use an unregistered kindle" and people who say "just register it and use it without a wi-fi"

or maybe you know other ways to activate translation function(not the dictionary) and wikipedia on an unregistered device

so please, if you know about it - tell me

Hello,

Finally I could jailbreak my Kindle PW5 and enjoying the great Koreader!

In the meantime I realized that KUAL is sorely missing extensions for newer kindles (firmware 5.16+) So I decided to take the plunge and put my experience to the use of the community and create/update some extensions.

So, without further ado, I present you :

Gargoyle Interactive Fiction interpreter for KUAL!

You need a jailbroken Kindle (firmware 5.16.3+) with KUAL installed.

Unzip the attached file to the extensions folder on the Kindle. Start KUAL and choose gargoyle.

This extension is based on pete330's port, with the original patches by baf.

For further instructions read the original thread.

Your feedback is always welcome!

Please tell me also what other extensions would you like to see?

No Compatible Device - Download for Transfer via USB

I just purchased an 11th generation Kindle so that I can backup my Kindle books to a PC. What is the last Kindle device that will allow me to backup to my PC? Are there any other workarounds?

I don't want Amazon deciding that the books I purchased are no longer appropriate and stop allowing me to download them to my device through their own cloud service.

It took me about 4 hours to download and cleanse my complete Amazon ebook library of near 600 books.

I have been casually backing up this book here, that book there for some time. But as Amazon is dropping this ability come February 25th, it was time to ensure I had backed up every book I've paid for.

Interestingly, there has to be about 200 books I've purchased and haven't read. I was a sucker for those $1/$5 deals for "the complete boxed set". And lots of books I MEANT to read, but just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I'm probably good for 5 or six years of never buying another books just to get through these.

But who am I kidding, I will still buy new books.

But Amazon will be the vendor of last resort now. I hear Kobo's books are still able to be liberated.

Hacks How useful is a K3 in this day and age?

This might be a stupid question, but how useful is even a modded K3 (or a kindle keyboard 3rd gen) nowadays, modded or not? Is there anything handy I can do with it? I'm new to all this so please give me some slack :p

I think this is a rare case but maybe it'll help someone.

I have a kindle keyboard whose battery life was finally getting very short. A few months ago it stopped working altogether: the screen went weirdly dark gray and the power switch did nothing, no matter how long you held it. Plugging it in got an orange charging light that would eventually turn off. It never turned green.

I thought about replacing the battery but the screen, besides being a shade of gray I'd never seen, had one bright white horizontal line and I thought there might be some damage there as well. In which case repair might not be worth the cost.

Everything I saw online just said to charge longer, use slow chargers, play around with the power switch, etc. Finally I found a blog post about fixing a dead kindle by short circuiting it. I thought I didn't have much to lose so I opened mine up to try - and then as soon as I plugged it in, without short circuiting or anything else, the light went green and it turned on (and the screen was perfect with no dead pixels).

There was a tiny screw that fell out when I opened the case. It must have gotten knocked out of place at some point (maybe the kindle was dropped recently). So there's a chance that screw had wound up getting in the way of something. I also found some references online to a micro-switch getting stuck and to a screen cable getting loose. It's not out of the question that the jostling needed to open the case got something back to its proper position.

The moral of the story: if you aren't able to get your kindle to turn on and are at the point where you think you'll have to get rid of it, at least try opening it up and taking a look.

I'm not sure if the problem's solved or if it's just a temporary fix - the battery is nearing the end regardless - but at least now I know the screen is fine and getting a new battery wouldn't be a waste.

(And I was inspired by this new lease on its life to finally install koreader :) To NiLuJe and everybody else who's made it possible to do that - a million thanks!)

Kindle Reboot Loop after Winterbreak

$

So, I jailbreaked my Kindle Gen 11 3 weeks ago, and have been using KOreader which I have been very happy with.

Today I had the device plugged into my computer, to remove some .MD highlights which I was not using. After I ejected my device (while it was in the Kindle userface), it started rebooting.

It's an endless reboot loop, until I turned airplane mode on.

If I start "Run Hotfix" it will reboot.

If I start "KUAL" I can open it and go to KOReader.

The issue is, that I cannot enable wifi anymore.

What to do?

I have an unregistered Kindle Touch 3G/wifi currently at 5.1.0. I need some recommendation(s) on which approach I should use to jailbreak this unit in order to setup sshd on it via USB. It was purchased with the ads. Amazon supports informs me that it can no longer be registered
